Braided Rosemary Cheese Bread

Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1 cup warm water (100 degrees F)
1 TBSP yeast
2 tsp salt
1 TBSP sugar
I TBSP Italian Herb extra virgin olive oil*
3 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (or 3 TBSP dry)
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1 egg
2 cup grated Colby Jack cheese (or any cheese)
5 cups bread flour (approx)

Method:

  1. Combine water, yeast, sugar and salt in medium bowl. Whisk together until the yeast is dissolved.
  2. Heat milk in small sauce pan to about 100 degrees F.
  3. Add milk to water mixture. Whisk together and add Italian Herb olive oil, Rosemary Essential Oil, garlic and egg. Mix until smooth.
  4. Add 2 cups of bread flour and mix until smooth. Add grated cheese and mix.  Slowly add the remaining flour and kneed until firm and smooth, not sticky.
  5. Put dough into greased bowl. Turn over so that the top of the dough is greased. Cover and let sit to double in size, about an hour. Once doubled in size, punch down the dough, kneed, and separate into six equal sized balls.
  6. Work the six balls to form long ropes, about 15" long. Pinch together the ends of three ropes and tightly braid the dough. Pinch the other end to finish. This will make two loaves.
  7. Grease a baking sheet and sprinkle on flour. Place the two loaves on the edges of the pan and let rise double in size, about 30  minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  9. Place pan in the oven as it preheats and bake for 22 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Remove from heat. Put softened butter or shortening on top to soften the crust.
  10. Enjoy!
